6 Hour Safety Shutdown
This is a standard feature on all Ambient Technologies and Signature Command™ system remote controls. When this feature is in the ON position, the fireplaces or stove will shut down after six hours if no function is sent.
7 Day Programmable Thermostat Remote Control
This 5/2 function allows you to program your thermostat setting for Monday through Friday (5) and on the weekend (2). Program up to four On/Off times per day.
This 110V receiver for remote control systems plugs in and does not require batteries.

Air Control / Air Inlet Control
The way the amount of air entering the air inlet is regulated.
A double- or triple-walled system that uses outside air to reduce the surface temperature of the chimney.
A stove type that allows you to put out a large fire by closing all the air inlets.
The ratio of air to fuel in an appliance that burns solid fuel. The typical amount of air necessary to burn one pound of wood is 35 pounds.
Air tubes supply secondary air for the firebox, which is required for the re-burning of gases created by the combustion process. Air tubes ensure more complete combustion for a cleaner burn.
An engineered process that helps keep your stove window clean automatically. The system requires 30 minutes of burning at maximum temperature to work properly.
Decorative iron posts that elevate the logs to a height just above the floor of the fireplace, supporting the logs and helping to keep them from rolling out of the firebox. Andirons also allow air to circulate around the log set, enabling proper burning with minimal smoke.
Ash Drawer / Ashpan
Provides easy cleanup for wood-burning stoves by collecting the ash in a removable pan or drawer built into the stove's design.
Back Puffing occurs when a negative pressure draft is created in a venting system.
Baffles improve overall efficiency and temperature distribution by creating a secondary combustion chamber inside the firebox. Baffles help re-burn combustion gases and reflect heat back into the firebox.
Basic Wall Thermostat
Ambient Technologies offers a variety of wall thermostats that are compatible with virtually all brands and models of hearth appliances. These basic units provide a way to manually set and maintain temperature in the rooms surrounding your stove or fireplace.
A motor-driven fan that pushes warm air from your fireplace into the surrounding room.
Blower Temperature Sensor / Fan Temperature Switch
A heat-activated thermo-disc that expands and contracts to turn the blower on and off.
British Thermal Unit. Measures how much heat is required to raise the temperature of a pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. BTU values are used to describe the heating capacity of a stove or fireplace in order to determine the amount of square feet it can warm.
A pan or tubes installed in gas stoves and fireplaces to deliver gas for combustion. The burner is placed under the log set or under the glass beads or stones that replace traditional logs in some contemporary fireplaces.
The number of pounds of fuel consumed in one hour of combustion.

Ceramic Fiber Logs
Ceramic fiber is a lightweight compound that is used to create realistic looking log sets for gas-burning hearth products. This delicately featured material gives off a natural red glow when exposed to gas flame.
A superior alternative to tempered glass, which can burst at higher temperatures. Ceramic glass is tested and certified to withstand high temperatures while allowing heat to radiate through its non-glare finish.

A specially designed structure that encloses portions of the chimney on the exterior of a house.
The last part of a venting system, through which exhaust gases are vented to the outside of the house.

Clearance the minimum distance required between a stove or fireplace and any combustible materials as defined in your local fire and building codes.
Wood, paper, natural and synthetic fibers, plastics, etc. that will ignite or burn. Combustible materials must be identified to determine minimum required clearance for walls, floors and ceilings that surround an installed stove or fireplace.
The rapid oxidation of fuel that gives off heat and light—i.e., burning.

The dedicated space in a stove or fireplace where combustion occurs. This area consists of the burner, a brick liner, and a firebox with a sealed glass door.
The process that circulates heat throughout the room using the natural air currents created by the transfer of heat energy from the surface of a stove or fireplace into the cooler air of the surrounding room.

A switch inside a remote control's transmitter that allows you to change the transmitter's frequency when you want to use two remote systems at the same time.
Direct Vent Gas stoves, fireplaces and inserts eliminate the need for a conventional chimney setup. These appliances draw air for combustion in from outdoors and exhaust outdoors as well using a pipe venting system. Direct Vent hearth products can vent out through the roof or wall of the house. Draft Control Rod
A manually operated control rod that regulates the amount of air in a wood-burning stove or fireplace.
Efficiency for stoves and fireplaces is expressed as the percentage of heat that goes toward actually warming the room as opposed to being vented outdoors.
Electronic ignition systems use electric current to light the fire, rather than a live spark.

EnerGuide FE Rating
An efficiency rating for vented gas stoves and fireplaces, established by the Government of Canada and the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). The rating is based on actual use and performance of the appliance throughout the home heating season.
US Environmental Protection Agency regulations for wood-burning stoves and fireplaces mandate that products sold after July 1, 1992 must emit no more than 4.1 g/hr for catalytic units and 7.5 g/hr for non-catalytic models. The airtight combustion chamber found in a stove or fireplace.
Fireplace inserts can be placed inside a masonry fireplace or within a factory-built metal firebox. They are generally used to improve the efficiency of an existing masonry fireplace.

Flue / Vent
The outlet for exhaust, generally leading outdoors.
Traditional, stand-alone stove construction, designed to be placed out away from the wall. Freestanding stoves can have legs or rest on top of a pedestal.
The radio wave bandwidth that a remote control unit broadcasts on.
Gasketing effectively seals the firebox in stoves and fireplaces, improving efficiency and promoting optimal burning of the unit's fuel.
The control that regulates the flow of gas going into a stove or fireplace.
A heavy platform made of cast iron or another metal, used to hold the solid fuel or the log set in a firebox.
The area surrounding a stove or fireplace, usually made from non-combustible brick or tile.
The portion of the non-combustible hearth that extends out beyond the front of the stove or fireplace.
Hearth Pad / Floor Protection
Wood-burning stoves and fireplaces require a set amount of non-combustible material to be placed under the appliance. The protective hearth pad must extend beyond all four sides of the unit. Refer to your product manual for specific requirements and installation instructions.
A device that transfers heat between two fluid streams while keeping those streams physically separated.
The maximum number of square feet that a stove or fireplace can heat effectively.
The amount of heat that a stove or fireplace needs to heat a room, expressed in BTU per hour.
The amount of usable heat that stove or fireplace sends into the room, expressed in BTU per hour.
Non-combustible material placed around a stove or fireplace or its exhaust pipes. Heat shields are used to absorb or reflect heat, reducing the minimum required clearance for installation.
The rate at which gas is supplied to a stove or fireplace.
Liquid Crystal Diode. Used in the display screen for remote control units.
Liquid Propane (LP)
Liquid Propane provides an excellent alternative to natural gas. Colorless and non-toxic, LP delivers a clean burn and does not damage the soil or water. You can purchase LP in pressurized cylinders for home use.
Narrow, parallel slats that overlap to allow for air circulation. Louvers add to the look of a circulating fireplace. A variety of decorative finishes are available.
A decorative shelf placed on the wall above a fireplace. Mantels can be made of brick, marble, wood, stone or concrete.
Term applied to various constructed items made from stone, brick or tile including mantels, surrounds, chimneys and hearths.
Millivolt Valve System
An ignition system found on gas stoves and fireplaces that uses a tiny internal generator (called a thermocouple) to hold the gas valve open for pilot and main burner operation. It uses the heat generated by the pilot light for energy, so appliances with a millivolt system are still operable during a power outage.
Mobile Home Approved
Signifies that a stove or fireplace is suitable for installation in a mobile home by offering reduced clearances, alternate venting systems or other special features.
Negative pressure situations can adversely affect the performance of a stove or fireplaces. These situations are usually caused by other appliances that draw air from inside the room, such as kitchen fans.
Often shortened to "Non-Cat" or "Non" — this combustion process found in wood-burning stoves uses airflow inside the firebox to re-burn smoke and gases instead of employing a catalyst. Vermont Castings makes the EPA's highest rated non-catalytic wood stove in the industry.
Oxygen Depletion Sensor.

Outside Air Kit
Install this kit to allow your stove or fireplace to combustion air from outside the house rather than from within the room. Recommended for well-insulated, tightly constructed homes.

A small flame used to ignite the main burner on a gas stove or fireplace. Plinth / Hearth Riser
Used to raise an insert in an existing fireplace opening to create a better fit.
The air required for starting a fire and for maintaining optimal airflow. The flow of primary air is regulated using the stove's built-in draft control rod.
Primary combustion takes place when the stove or fireplace's fuel source is burned in the firebox, as opposed to the smoke, particles and gases that are burnt later.
Programmable Wall Thermostat

An electrical switch that alters the speed of a blower fan by varying the amount of current flowing into it.

This standard safety feature shuts off the supply of gas to the pilot and main burner if the ignition fails to light. Powered by a thermocouple, this system will work even in the event of a power failure.
Properly seasoned wood has been allowed to dry anywhere from 6 to 12 months. Seasoned wood burns more easily and emits fewer particulates than freshly cut wood.
Separate from primary air, secondary air is used to burn gases, smoke and particles inside the combustion chamber. Secondary air does not influence the rate of primary combustion.
A type of metal heat shield which affixes to a gas or wood stove to absorb heat and reduce clearances.

Spill Switch / Safety Shut Off Device
This temperature-sensing device automatically shuts off the pilot and main burner on gas appliances when a blocked flue or downdraft situation occurs.
The point of exit for combustion exhaust. This is the very last segment of the chimney system.
Termination Cap / Chimney Cap
A finished end cap that is mounted on a roof or wall chimney termination. Provides a finished look to the chimney while protecting the chimney system from intrusion by birds and other small animals.
A unit of heat measurement equivalent to 100,000 BTUs.
Thermal efficiency is expressed as the percentage of heat generated by combustion that is radiated through the appliance and out into the room as useful warmth.
The 30 MV thermocouple installed in some gas appliances acts as a small generator, using the heat of the pilot to power the appliance's safety shut-off device.
A small, disc-shaped temperature sensor that sends electrical current to the blower motor by bending when heat is applied.
A 750 MV internal generator that creates electrical current when heat is applied. It allows the valve coil to operate open or closed to send gas to the main burner.

A device that sends a radio signal to a receiver.
Trim kits feature decorative bars that can be attached to the inside edge of a fireplace. Available in many different styles and finishes, these trim kits can create a distinctive look to match any décor.
Vent Free or Unvented gas appliances do not require an outside venting system to operate. They draw combustion air from inside the room and are designed to burn up to 99.9% efficiently, eliminating the need for outside exhaust. Vent Free stoves, fireplaces and inserts are approved for installation in most areas of the United States. Check with local building officials for approval in your area. These appliances are not approved for use in Canada.
These decorative and functional stove accessories can be attached to either side of a stove. The shelves come with mitten racks that can be used to warm clothes and other items by the stove.
Zero Clearance Fireplace
Zero clearance fireplaces are designed to be installed where there is no existing masonry fireplace. "Zero Clearance" denotes that these fireplaces can be installed in direct contact with combustible walls and floors. Their inner and outer shell construction allows for maximum heat insulation. They can be placed on any inner wall that allows for proper venting, making them quite popular for both renovations and new home construction. Zero clearance fireplaces are a relatively inexpensive way to add value to a home.
